Outing to the Slave Lodge
Today the Grade 4's had a very interesting outing to the Slave Lodge at the top of Adderley Street in Cape Town. As part of their History syllabus, they need to know about communication through the ages and postal stones play an important part in how this was done. The children were given an overview of communication in the past, starting with the Egyptians and continuing through to the time of the Portuguese sailors that came past the Cape of Good Hope on their way to India in the 1600's. There are several original postal stones at the Slave Lodge, which the children looked at and tried to find out information about the various ships crews that had used them. It was very informative and fun for the children.
