Outing to the Noon Gun
We couldn't have chosen a more beautiful day to go to Signal Hill to watch the Noon Gun. On arrival, Mr Malgas told the children and the many tourists about the Noon Gun and he showed them the gunpowder that they use to load the cannons. At 12 noon a message comes from the Observatory to ignite the gunpowder to set off the loud bang and produce the puff of smoke that accompanies it. The children had a fantastic time there and it was a great way for them to see first-hand exactly what we have been learning about in class. The photos below speak for themselves!
Loading the Gun
Below you will see how the gunpowder is loaded into the gun and the mechanism that causes the ignition. Thank you to the Dad that took these photos and generously shared them with us!
